PACE demands EU to send a rescue mission to the Mediterranean Sea
With the adoption of the report “Saving lives in the Mediterranean Sea: the need for an urgent Response” by SOC rapporteur Domagoj Hajduković, PACE today offered strong backing to NGOs across Europe who are engaged in search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea.
„The report makes it unambiguously clear that it is the responsibility of the EU to save lives in the Mediterranean Sea right now. So we ask for the launch of a new rescue mission. It is an outright shame that search and rescue has up until now been conducted first and foremost by NGOs, who have tirelessly fought against the dying in front of our European borders. They shouldn’t have to do this - instead, state leaders must finally act and take on what is without a doubt their responsibility“, said Frank Schwabe, Chair of the Group of Socialists, Democrats and Greens in PACE.
