ROMANIA'S ATTEMPT TO CHANGE ELECTORAL LAW 4 MONTHS BEFORE ELECTIONS
We have great concerns about the situation in Romania and the attempt of the government to change the electoral law 4 months before the local elections, in breach of the Code of Good Practice in Electoral Matters of the Venice Commission, which stipulates that fundamental elements of an electoral law should not be change less than one year before an election.
The Venice Commission is the appropriate body to assess this issue and its opinion should be requested by the Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, on the compatibility of this electoral change with the relevant provisions of the Council of Europe.
