Anne Cooper-Davis

Anne Cooper-Davis has been married to Terry Davis for 41 years. They have a son and a daughter and two grandchildren.

She is involved both in political life and in associations for human rights, childcare and the defence of the environment.  For 15 years she has run her own Management and Training Consultancy.

A commitment to political life

Anne is engaged in politics in her own right. She served as a member of a County Council for 12 years and was a Parliamentary Candidate in 1979. Her work with NGOs has included membership of a New Town Development Corporation and a Regional Health Authority – both organisations with multi-million pound budgets.

Her interest in the Council of Europe means that, whenever possible, Anne accompanies Terry when he attends Committee Meetings and Monitoring visits. She has played an active role during these visits; for example in Georgia and Belarus she visited NGOs, schools, hospitals and homes for children, using her expertise to evaluate the standard of provision and the human rights of those in the care of the state. These visits are informed by her work in training the Inspectors of private and state-run homes for adults and children.

Dedicated to equal opportunities

Anne was for many years an active member of the National Women’s Committee of the Labour Party.  When she was elected as a member of the National Executive Committee of the British Labour Party she was committed to improving equal opportunities as the chairperson of the Women’s Committee.

A vocation to help others

She has been a teacher and a lecturer in schools and colleges in U.K., and since 1988 has been a Governor of the Firs Primary School. For 12 years, she was a member of the East Birmingham Community Health Council, an NGO that monitors standards of care in the NHS.

As a management and training consultant to local and health authorities across the UK, she worked to improve the standards of care and to protect the dignity and human rights of adults and children who are vulnerable to abuse.

In 1977 she founded a Women’s Refuge that has protected thousands of women and children from violent domestic relationships. She is also involved with the Firs Child Care Centre Ltd, a Voluntary Day Nursery for children aged 2 to 4 years. She is a member of Amnesty International, the Fabian Society, Socialist Environmental Association, Socialist Education Association and Socialist Health Association.

Anne Davis has made several publications, such as: “Managing to Care: Regulation of Private Nursing Homes” (1987, Patten Press), “The New Face of the NHS” (1991, 1993, Peter Spurgeon, Longmans), “Standards of Institutional Care for Older People” in “Continuing Care for Older People” (1997, Michael J Denham)…
